So, let’s start this conversation off first by talking about what rosacea is. Rosacea is when your skin appears red with broken blood vessels, you could also be more prone to breakouts and or clogged pores. Sometimes rosacea can be mistaken for acne, eczema, or a skin allergy. About 14 million Americans suffer from rosacea and I am one of those lucky Americans. The cause of rosacea is unknown but there are many things that can make it worse and better for that matter.
There is no cure for this condition but a great skincare line like James Anthony and lifestyle changes will give the best results for clearer skin. First off, a gentle but effective face wash is a must. Come Undone is fragrance free and is a gentle but effective way to clean while not stripping the skin. When washing the face use luck warm or cool water always. Cold water and/or hot water can cause redness and irritation. The next step is to moisturize and balance out the skin. Some of us with rosacea have oily skin and couldn’t imagine using a moisturizer but this will actually make your skin less oily believe it or not. When our sebaceous glands are being constantly striped of oil, they produce more oil. So, once we moisturize the skin the sebaceous glands will even out stopping the overproduction of oil.
The next step to help the broken capillaries and breakouts is to use a retinol product. You must be very cautious when using a retinol because it can cause more irritation if you are not careful. Many retinol products that are on the market have large molecules that sit on top of the skin instead of penetrating into the skin. When anything in skincare sits on top of the skin, it will cause a reaction that can include redness and breakouts. James Anthony’s pm cream/treatment, Resurrect, contains retinol that does not irritate the skin. Even though our retinol is less irritating than others, I highly suggest starting off slow with this product. I personally started off using it only every 3 to 4 days at first, but now I can use it nightly and daily as a spot treatment on blemishes. Retinol will actually make the skin thicker and less sensitive over time. It’s known to be one of the best antiaging, acne treatment out there. Say goodbye to fine lines, sunspots and acne!
When using a retinol, you must use an SPF. I know using sunscreen when you have rosacea sounds awful because sunscreens can literally feel like it’s burning our face. This is due to all the man-made harmful chemicals found in most sunscreens. Well I have great news for my brothers and sisters with sensitive skin like myself. Holy Veil spf 35 is chemical free and has NO irritation properties in it. Last but certainly not least, serums are great for all skin types but with rosacea it is very difficult to find a serum that once again won’t cause issues with our sensitive skin, so we miss out on the amazing benefits that serums can do for the skin. The Genie in a Bottle will not disappoint with its very powerful vitamin action for your skin cells. This serum is like your daily vitamins for your skin. It is packed with vitamin A, C, D, B, E and K… basically half the alphabet! It is of course fragrance free and once again has the technology to penetrate the skin and not sit on top to cause irritation for sensitive skin people.
Ok, so on to the lifestyle stuff to help with rosacea. Let’s start off with the hardest one to control, that would be STRESS for me! Experts say stress can cause flare-ups and worsens symptoms. Try and get a minimum of 6 hours of sleep but aim for 8 hours. Exercise can also be a great stress reliever and your behind might thank you too. When exercising, try and stick to low-intensity exercises like walking, yoga, swimming and even just meditating. High-impact exercises can actually make rosacea worse by producing too much blood flow to the face causing redness and broken capillaries. Try not to get too hot in general if you can. For myself, I live in Arizona, so this is literally impossible lol! Avoid spicy foods and limit alcoholic beverages as much as possible. Make a list of foods, drinks, and activities that trigger an outbreak and try to avoid them. With that said you need to live life and have fun, so on occasion have some fun and have that margarita and spicy tacos you beautiful red faced you!!! XOXO
